IOM steps in to assist with movement of thirteen (13) Victims of Trafficking
Pretoria, 24 August 2022 - The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in South Africa has supported the voluntary repatriation of 13 Victims of Trafficking (VoTs) to their country of origin, Malawi.
The thirteen (13) male VoTs were rescued during an operation by law enforcements officers responsible for priority crimes and investigation. The victims were recruited for employment purpose and were subjected to forced labour, exploitation and slavery working conditions by a Johannesburg based textile factory.
IOM in collaboration with the Malawi High Commission in South Africa, the Department of Social Development and the Department of Home Affairs facilitated the repatriation. IOM ’s support included transportation assistance, pre-departure medical screening, clothing, and personal hygiene kits. The Department of Social Development provided shelter and psychosocial support prior to their departure. The Malawi High Commission issued emergency travel documents and the Department of Home Affairs facilitated their exit at OR Tambo Airport.
IOM will also provide post arrival psychosocial and reintegration support in an effort to assist them to settle back into their communities and homes. The rescued VoTs departed South Africa on 24 August 2022 to Malawi.
